The Proposal
J and I have been dating for over 3 years now but we've known each other since our college days. We first met back in '06-'07 when we both danced on Kaba Modern and I'll be honest, I never would have thought we'd match up together. She was this little dancing machine that always wore this green track jacket like it was going out of style and I was a dorky kid that always wore a black trucker hat, even when I gelled my hair.
We lost touch through the years but reconnected thanks to Twitter. I tweeted something about Ne-Yo's album back in 2012, she responded, and I sent her a little flirty tweet back.
A few days after our Twitter conversation, we decided to meet up for some lunch in Carlsbad. I remember being a little hesitant to meet up because it was a Sunday and the Chargers were playing the Broncos and back then, we still had a decent team. I picked her up and we headed over to the Broken Yolk Cafe and they were playing the game anyways, so it worked out perfectly.
Things felt like your average friendly lunch meet up until it came time for me to drop her off. For some reason, I felt inclined to ask her if she still wanted to hang out and she said "sure!" so enthusiastically. We ended up cruising over to the beach by her place and just talked for hours. At that moment, I remember thinking to myself, this actually feels like some kind of date and how nice it was hanging out with her.
After our little "date" I was fully NOT expecting to talk to her for a while but one of our mutual friends, Lawrence Kao - who at the time was an actor on The Walking Dead - died on TV later that night. I remember being so stoked for Lawrence and being super bummed and texting J about it when he was killed off on The Walking Dead.
We'd text back and forth almost everyday after that and eventually I asked her out on our first official date. And then our second. And then our third. And forth. And fifth. You get the idea.
Finally, on December 21, 2012, I asked her to be my girlfriend. To this day, she still talks about how much she hates how I asked her out. I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting to ask her at all but according to the Mayan calendar, the world was supposed to end so I HAD to act quickly! Luckily for her, my proposal was a lot better. :)
We'd actually planned on going to Yosemite this past weekend but those plans changed after we got Lucy. Temperatures reached nearly 0 degrees and there was no way I'd want to risk Lucy or anyone of us freezing to death, so we decided to go somewhere else we've always wanted to go, Big Sur.
We made the 6 hour trip with J's sisters and Lucy and I have to say it was probably the best weekend of my life. It was gloomy the whole weekend but it was still beautiful nonetheless and it was the perfect backdrop for our proposal.
We headed up to Big Sur just for the weekend but we seriously packed so many events into just a few days. Most of our adventuring came on Saturday when we drove down the 1 highway along the coast and stopped whenever we found random trails along the water. We eventually made our way to Bixby Bridge and Pfeiffer Beach, the location where I proposed.
I don't remember being nervous at all. I was really just excited to start the next chapter of our lives because let's be honest, I knew she'd say yes. ;)
